Memorial Day

For many people, Memorial Day is just another reason of excitement because of having a three day weekend. After all, who doesn’t enjoy having an extra day off? Especially at this time of the year when the sun is starting to come out, bringing out the first taste of warm summer days. For many others, it is a reason to celebrate because it brings families together to have a barbecue, spend sometime together, and enjoy one another’s company.

We would like to remind everyone what this holiday is really about. Memorial Day was formally known as Decoration Day and originated after the Civil War to honor all Americans who had died in service of their country. Later on this day became officially recognized by the Federal Government as Memorial Day to honor all of those who we have lost while in military service.

We would like to honor this country’s fallen heroes who have give their all to protecting our freedoms that we greatly enjoy. We will be showing our support by hoisting a flag at each one of our locations located throughout Chicago in Auburn Gresham, Beverly,  Carol Stream, Streamwood, Lisle, and Wheaton,

Additionally, we will be offering 3 Months at 50% for a limited time during the Memorial Day holiday. Visit our website now to reserve!

Wheaton, IL. One of America’s Safest Cities.

Last year, NeighborhoodScout performed a study to rank the Top 100 Safest Cities in the U.S. We are proud to say that we serve #31 on this list, Wheaton IL! Now you may be thinking, “Thirty-One? That’s not so impressive.” Well to put it into perspective, considering the United States has 35,000 cities and towns, Wheaton is actually in the .089th percentile when it comes to safety. In addition, they have also found Wheaton, IL to have an overall crime rate that is 71% lower than other communities in Illinois.

So you may be asking yourself, how NeighborhoodScout is able to rank 35,000 cities? They take into account a city’s population and the type of crimes per thousand residents, as well as the active law enforcement agencies in the U.S. (municipal police, county sheriff, park and port police, campus police, etc.)

Chance of becoming a Victim of a Crime
Wheaton, IL: 1 in 109
America Overall: 1 in 32

NeighborhoodScout was even able to separate violent crime and property crime to provide the most accurate representation of Wheaton. The combination of the two, labeled under the blanket term “crime,” can often be skewed by certain metrics. Below is an example of how they are separated.

Violent Crime: armed robbery, assault, rape, and murder.
Chance of becoming a Victim of a Property Crime in Wheaton, IL
1 in 1578.

Property Crime: burglary, motor vehicle theft, victim of arson, or larceny.
Chance of becoming a Victim of a Property Crime in Wheaton, IL
1 in 118.

For those of you in living in Wheaton, surely you are as proud as we are to call Wheaton home! Hopefully these statistics did not frighten you, but if they did, you may want to consider relocating to Zionsville, Indiana – listed as America’s Safest City. If you’d like to find out more about Wheaton’s rating or any other city on the list, check out the links below!

Top Places to Study Abroad from a Wheaton Perspective

With the weather starting to warm up here in Wheaton IL, students are moving their focus away from schoolwork and looking ahead at sights of sand and sun to determine where they should go for a summer semester abroad!
We collaborated with students from Wheaton College and the College of DuPage. They talked to us about some of their favorite places they have traveled to.

Spain – International College of Seville

Seville is a warm, charming city filled with a lot of rich cultural heritage. It has an antique charm to it and a pacing that encourages you to take time for yourself. You can make the most out of your trip through sightseeing and becoming immersed with its culture.008_giralda_theredlist

“My semester in Seville was extraordinary and an experience that I will never forget. When I decided to study abroad, I did not expect to fall in love with the city and the people. I met some of my best friends in Seville and I am still keep in close contact with them. I will never forget how hospitable and helpful they were towards me and I left Seville feeling more like a native than a tourist.”

– Ashley from Wheaton College

“Seville is not about yesterday, and not about tomorrow. It is about today… and every day is beautiful in Seville. By the way, for everyone who lives in the cold northern parts of the US, there are palm trees in Seville; lots of ’em!!”

– Michael from College of DuPage

France – Alliance Française de Bordeaux

Bordeaux is considered by many to be France’s most beautiful city. It offers a vibrant cultural life and architecture that shows off its rich, historical tradition.

My classmates and I would often explore Paris together, going out for drinks, to see movies, etc., and some of us even rented a car one weekend and drove to the beach in Normandy. Overall – the Alliance Francaise provided great teaching, wonderful support and a fabulous place for building friendships – I highly recommend the program!”

– Lindsay, from Wheaton College

All of the students in the Wheaton Area we talked to said the most important things to remember was to make sure your passport is all set, file any visa paperwork that needs to be done, and make sure that flight arrangements are all set.

Here at U-Stor-It Carol Stream, we support all of the students in Wheaton area traveling abroad and expanding their horizons.

The Benefits of Being Well-Organized

Being organized has many benefits, which go past just having a tidy looking area. It includes peace of mind, increased productivity, and a general sense of happiness.  Here at U-Stor-It, we composed a list of why it’s good to be well organized.

Less Stress

There’s a reason why this is at the top of our list. If there was any single reason to keep things neat and tidy, it would be to reduce the levels of stress in your life. After all, who wants to come back to a  home  where everything is cluttered and it’s hard to find the important items you were looking for, specifically the remote.

More time

This leads us into the second benefit of being well organized. When you know where everything is, you are able to efficiently find items instead of stressing out and making a mess of things. I know because this happens to me too… If searching for an item takes an average of 10 minutes, those are 10 minutes of ‘free time’ that we can spend in numerous other ways. I would much rather spend that time doing something fun instead of having to clean up the mess we just made looking around for something in a pile of items.

Saves Money

The worst feeling in the world is when you know you have something, somewhere, hidden in your home. You look around helplessly trying to find it, only to admit defeat and buy it again. Eventually after you buy it and the return date expires you find the original item you were looking for! By being better organized, you won’t have to waste money in a situation like this since you will know where everything is.

Improved Health and Happiness

Remember earlier when I mentioned the reason why less stress is at the top of this list? With less stress in your life comes improved health. There are numerous studies that cite weight loss, increased happiness, increased immunity, longer life longevity, better relationships, and a healthier heart.

“Even if you usually eat well and exercise, chronic high stress can prevent you from losing weight—or even add pounds,” says Pamela Peeke, MD, author of Body for Life for Women.

Valentine’s Day & Storage

What does Valentine’s Day have in common with Self-Storage? You are about to find out!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner in a few days, you might be wondering “how can I make this day extra special?” It has practically become a staple for so many people to go out and buy candy and flowers, but we want to stand out by doing something unique and memorable.

Nothing says ‘”I love you” better than a do-it-yourself craft idea! There is a saying that goes, “it’s the thought that counts” and hopefully  that thought is crafted together with some handy skills.  Here’s our top three favorite ideas.

1. Hanging Baskets for Easy Storage!

For sprucing up a bathroom all you need is a basket!

2. Mason Jar Storage

To add an artistic feel to your spice cabinet, use empty mason jars! You can also use this idea to put various crafts inside as well!

3. PVC Wine Rack

This is one of my favorites! All you have to do is find extra PVC piping and make sure that it is large enough to store a bottle of your favorite wine. Then, just glue them to one another and you can paint them or design them however you want!

Another way you can stand out by giving your special someone some extra space! Yes, that’s right, I did say space! By giving them some extra room, you’ll be able to have extra to yourselves and provide them with the office, leisure space, or room for activities they have always wanted!
